Cosmos X Review 15

Last July 25, Cherry Mobile introduced four powerful quad-core phones through an exclusive event at One Esplanade in Pasay City. A MediaTek quad-core chip and remarkable screens set the Cosmos series better than they previously launched. Luckily, we got to experience Cherry Mobile Cosmos X. Watch the unboxing video to prepare you for this detailed review.

The Form

Cosmos X Review 15

The physical appearance of the Cherry Mobile Cosmos X resembles the Alcatel Idol Ultra sans the capacitive buttons. This is one of the few phones that Cherry launched without capacitive buttons. Instead, the Philippines’ fruit company opted for soft keys, similar to what you can find on Nexus 4.

Cosmos X packs a 4.7 in SUPER AMOLED HD Display underneath a Corning Gorilla Glass 2 screen with an extra-high density of 320 PPI and 5 multi-touch points. With a Super AMOLED HD Display, you can easily see its difference compared to our aging Blaze and Blaze 2.0. It produces vibrant colors, pitch black, leveled contrast images, which make the Cosmos X an awesome device if you’re particular to display quality. Keep in mind that the Cosmos X’s display made it pricier than the devices that Cherry previously launched.

Physical buttons such as power button, volume rockers and camera shutter are placed typically at the sides of the device (see video above for exact locations of these buttons). A 3.5 mm headset jack is also neatly placed at the top of the device.

I find the camera cover overly protruded. This isn’t actually a big deal but it could relatively be an aesthetic issue for some.

A star-like grill is also placed at the bottom of the device for the speakers. Star = Cosmos. Well played, Cherry Mobile.

Performance

Cherry Mobile Cosmos Series has MediaTek quad-core processors revving inside. Cosmos X, being the most affordable among the Cosmos line, has a Mediatek MT6589 1.2Ghz quad-core processor. It has a generous 1 GB RAM, which helps the device render 3D graphics and handle graphics-heavy games effortlessly.  Here are the different benchmarks for your perusal:

The benchmarks are expected because of the power of its quad-core; and truly, I did not experience much lags while testing the device. Needless to say, it’s one of the snappiest devices yet from Cherry Mobile!

More so, this device only has an internal memory of 4GB. You’d be disappointed to know that it wouldn’t work if you’re thinking of jacking up a USB disk via USB-OTG cable. Thankfully, it is expandable up to 32 GB via the integrated microSD slot.

Cosmos X also has operating system of Android Jellybean 4.2.1, the same thing with other Cosmos devices. It adds up to the beauty of the device because it compliments the power and endurance of quad-core. With this version of Jellybean, you can easily immerse yourself to the growing ecosystem of Android and its applications via Play Store.

Camera

Cosmos X has 2 cameras, one at the back and one in front. The back camera has a whopping 18 megapixel with BSI sensor and an LED Flash. While a number of people believe that it’s 18mp shutter is just a software interpollated, the quality of pictures it produces is respectable.  Here are the sample shots:

Battery

The battery is only 1,800 mAh. Being a power user (SMS, Facebook, Twitter and gaming are included during my usage), the battery only lasted for 16 hours.

Conclusion

All in all, the Cherry Mobile Cosmos X defines who the Cherry Mobile is right now – simple, smooth, attractive yet powerful. I recommend this phone for all the quad-core fans out there. Arguably, its price may be too steep but Cherry Mobile tried to cover every penny with freebies like free flip cover, extra screen protector and back shell. Don’t get me wrong though. More than the freebies, the seemingly high price is accounted for the Super AMOLED HD display, noteworthy cameras and outstanding hardware performance.

Priced at PhP9,999, this is obviously Cherry’s response to widening the market share. O+ and Starmobile are on spotlight when it comes to more-than-10-grand competition; and Cherry believes that it deserves a good spot in it. Also, I’ve heard from a reliable source that Cherry is ranked #2 in the Philippines in terms of volumes of devices sold (next to a company that starts with a letter ‘S’). There is one way to becoming the 1st; and that is to compete directly with the ‘giants’ in the similar industry.
