The octa-core race is really on! The giant local mobile phone company, Cherry Mobile, recently launched its first true octa-core device, Cosmos Z2.
The follow-up to last year’s Cosmos Z is on fire with its 1.7Ghz Media-Tek octa-core processor. According to Cherry Mobile’s product and sales manager, Lonson Alejandrino, the device’s processor is part of Mediatek’s latest chipset MT6592. During the launch, Alejandrino showed a video from Mediatek which shows a definitive performance benchmark of the said chipset. Check out the video below:
By true octa-cora, this means that the Cosmos Z2 has eight cores that are working simultaneously to optimally run resource-heavy applications and demanding games. According to Alejandrino, “We wanted to exceed all our competitive smartphones in the market. The Cosmos series is one of our most promising lines yet – looking back, we became the first and we remain to be the only local brand with phones with Super AMOLED Technology. And being our first octa-core smartphone, the Cosmos Z2 deserves to lead this line of products”.
Cosmos Z2’s edge isn’t just all about its processer. In fact, it has more features up its sleeve: it has full HD IPS OGS Display (with Dragon Trail protection), 2gb RAM, slim and solid build, preinstalled with EFXpress video editor, 18mp AF BSI rear camera with flash, 8mp front-facing camera and can shoot videos up to 30fps and has HEVC video encoding capability. Oh and before I forget, this device is ready for an OTA upgrade to Kitkat in March 2014.

It is very early to give my impressions about this device, but one thing’s for sure: I’m excited to test this out. I already ordered a device from Cherry Mobile. Yes, I am buying one for keeps; and I hope that this won’t turn into a regrettable decision.
