Last February 4, 2015, Sony held 2 events at Imperium e-Sports Bar and Video Game Lounge Metrowalk to preview 2 new games exclusive for the Playstation 4, – “The Order: 1886” and “Bloodborne”. The events were attended Sony Computer Entertaining officers (Marketing Department Sony Computer Entertainment Hong Kong Singapore Branch, Jesslyn Foo; and SCE Japan Asia, Arate Naito) Playstation 4 fans, members of the media and Myrtle Sarrosa.

The Order: 1886

If you want to become a Knight of the alternate version of the Victorian era London, then you will enjoy Ready at Dawn Studios’ “The Order: 1886”. The studio behind the said game created the all-time favorites, Daxter and some of the God of War games.

You play as Sir Galahad, a member of a knight order which aims to kill all half-breeds using steampunk tech and unbelievably cool arsenals.

The game is a third person action adventure game, with “filmic” elements. During the demo played by Myrtle Sarrosa, most of the scenes were like video cut-scenes than actual playable scenes with interactive environment. We were astounded to see Sir Galahad moved to where Myrtle wanted him to go. This is the unique selling proposition of The Order, and it’s amazing!

Here’s a gameplay video by EurogamerPortugal for your reference. This is the same demo I played during the preview event.

I got the chance to play the game for about 10 minutes and here are some of my initial impressions:

  • Great graphics, with “filmic experience”. If you want to play games, with immersive graphics – thanks to Playstation 4’s outstanding hardware – get this game.
  • Controls are a bit clunky. Some people who also got the chance to play the game verified my impression. This is, of course, inconclusive, because I only had a short time to learn the controls.
  • The demo runs on 30fps at 1080p, which I don’t totally mind because if felt really more natural.
  • There are mini puzzles in the game, which features steampunk goodness!
  • Since it’s an alternate history, I saw Nicola Tesla, making electricity-charged guns for Sir Galahad.

Bloodborne

Sony also previewed a new game from the makers of the hit Dark Souls series (Demon Souls, Dark Souls, Dark Souls 1), Bloodborne. This game is not in any way connected with the storyline of Demon Souls or Dark Souls, but it espouses the same action role-playing elements. It also comes with a risk-reward system, where – for instance – regain some of your health by hitting back enemies within an allotted time.

The game follows the story of a lone adventurer who traveled to the cursed-city of Yharnam. The latter is plagued with illness that malformed its denizens into monsters and sometimes demonic creatures. Everyone, except the hunters, are considered trespassers by the malformed and inflicted inhabitants. This game isn’t exactly for those who’ve got weak hearts.

Just like The Order, I also got a chance to play the game. Here are some of my impressions:

  • Gameplay is indeed like Dark Souls 1 and 2.
  • Creatures are carefully designed.
  • At first look, the game (at least for the demo) does not seem to utilize the full processing and graphics power of the Playstation 4. However, when I paid attention to the minute details of the game such as flowing hair, environment artifacts, model tones, I immediately realized that those are something that the previous Playstation couldn’t handle.
  • Controls are more refined than Dark Souls, but it still has a lot of room for growth and enhancement.
