Budget tablets are everywhere. It’s a somehow a good thing for Filipinos as tablets are usually seen as aspirational products especially those who wish to take their movie viewing or gaming into a more immersive big-screen levels.
Torque recognizes this marketing opportunity so they assembled a new tablet line-up, Ego Tab S and Ego Phab. We got lucky to have been given an Ego Tab S a couple of days ago. You can check our unboxing video above or click this link to watch the video directly via YouTube.
The Ego Tab S sports a 7-inch HSVGA capacitive screen display. Contrast and saturation levels are average, but does the job of clearly showing details of content. Texts are readable and photos look good despite the lack of pixels presented per inch. The tablet does not have capacitive buttons as everything is on-screen.
It’s interesting that the device’s physical buttons are located at the top panel of the device. Check out the image below with hotspots for your reference. Try it. It’s pretty cool.

Ego Tab S has 3mp front and main cameras with fixed lens. Don’t keep your hopes up with these cameras because they don’t actually take impressive photos.
The device is running on Android 4.4.2 Kitkat with barely any modification. After turning on the device, I was greeted with Torque’s familiar boot up tune followed by software initialization.
Browsing through its UI is surprisingly fluid. Things can get really awry though when I started opening more than 3 applications that require memory and software resources. Unfortunately, the tablet’s 512mb RAM isn’t just enough to keep up with the applications that we usually open like Facebook, Fenix, Chrome with 3-4 tabs opened, and a game “Ready Steady Bang”.
The tablet does not have SIM modules available so you’re stuck with WiFi if you wish to connect to the internet. For media consumers out there, you’ll be happy to know that the device has a lot for a microSD that supports up to 32gb storage.
Torque Ego Tab S is now available for only PhP1,699.
