Kim Pauig never wanted photojournalism. She only got into it because she wanted to own a DSLR camera. She got what she yearned for in 2012 when she bought a Canon 500D. She didn’t realize though that it will change her life and others in the process. She later fell in love with the subject she didn’t like and joined a few campus publications. She then ended up to be an intern at an international news wire agency, Agence France-Presse.

Kim’s story didn’t end there, as it was just a facet of her colorful and frame-worthy snippet of life with cameras and photography. Last month, her cousins recommended her to join AirAsia Travel Photographer 2016. She was later announced as one of the top finalists of the said competition.

For someone to be part of the top finalists of the competition is a big deal. Kim’s photos had gone through the eyes of Nachi Ugarte, the creative director of GRID magazine; Jacob Maentz, a Cebu based freelance travel and photographer; Wawi Navarroza, a world-renowned artist and fashion photographer based in Manila; and Air Asia’s Head of Branding, Rudy Khaw. These people have the eyes to distinguish between emotion and evocative, composed and hapless, and, creative and insight-less.

Kim’s photography style – apart from being full of emotions, composed and creative – will bring in a new ingredient to the table – advocacy. She reckoned that capturing the standards and nod of the judges is half the battle. While she does the latter, she feels that it is more important to “disturb” people in the comfort of their homes and “challenge them to move and do something for the betterment of the society”. This sense of advocacy permeates in the photos she took, without sacrificing composition excellence.

Zeroing in composition and technique, Kim admits that she still needs to find her own style. In an interview, she told me, “From time to time, my approach to photography varies whenever I learn new tricks. But what is constant is that I try to take photos that intrigue me, and to incorporate as much elements that complement each other in one frame.”

There are 3 things we can learn from Kim:

  • “Omnia Mutantur”, things change. Life is always in constant flux. What you despise to do now, may be different in the future. Your interests may change, and you need to be open to it.
  • In photography, don’t just shoot photos. Put a sense and purpose on every shot.
  • Be hungry for new learning. Make sacrifices to widen the breadth of knowledge and skills.
