As the era of 5G draws near, companies are starting to invest more on figuring out how current and next gen mobile devices can take advantage of this technology.
In fact, OPPO has been able to successfully access 5G signaling and data links using commercially available mobile devices. The connection was implemented using a device that’s based on the OPPO R15, and makes use of the Qualcomm Snapdragon X50 5G modem.
[su_quote cite=”Liu Chang, Director of OPPO Research Institute”]Access to the signaling and data links is the basis to ensure reliability in the communications function of 5G mobile phones, and is also an important step to bring 5G smartphones to maturity. OPPO has used a commercially available mobile phone to access 5G signaling and data links, and this will speed up the development of our 5G smartphones, and lay a solid foundation for the launch of commercially available 5G products in 2019. This breakthrough was based on the 3GPP Release 15 NSA Standard, using the 10 MHz bandwidth in 4G LTE Band 5 and the 20MHz bandwidth in 5G NR n78, which is one of most widely used 5G NR frequency in the world, and is also considered as to be the most likely band or priority deployment worldwide.
5G is set to improve all networking aspects, including speed, stability, reliability, and latency, paving the way for a variety of new experiences such as 3D communcations, 4K+ UHD videos, online AR/VR, cloud-based offices, and cloud gaming. Since 2015, OPPO has tapped on a long-term investment in 5G, and has since taken a leading position in the industry.
In May of this year, OPPO successfully implemented the world’s first 5G video call demonstration using 3D structured light. The company was able to showcase peak transmission rates with a downlink of 1.4Gbps and an uplink of 160Mbps. The 5G application project it proposed also won first prize in the “Blooming Cup” 5G Application Contest, which was sponsored by the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology, China Information and Communication Research Institute and the IMT-2020 (5G) Promotion Group.
OPPO will continue to accelerate its 5G product development, making further progress in 5G protocol and testing as well as data link interoperability, in its aim of bringing a completely new and innovative experience to users.
