Speed Magazine held its annual Geek Wars at the SM Cyber Month launch last August at the SM Mall of Asia. At the third year of its run, this year’s was home to many firsts.
For one, it coincided with the launch of SM Cyber Month, an annual activation which gives shoppers a chance to up their tech driven lifestyle with awesome deals on gadgets from the most popular brands.
Another is that for the first time, Speed’s gaming event was joined by members of the media and the blogging community. It’s a test of speed, skill, and mental acuity. Three teams participated in the contest –
- Team A -Techie Titas (Mia Barrientos and Marisa Consuelo of Gadgets Magazine, Badeth Pangilinan of Chinese Commercial News)
- Team B- JAY (Anjie Delos Reyes of teknogadyet.com, Yrda Fernandez of gizguide.ph, and John Cueto of larawanatkape.ph)
- Team C (Bam Amor of adobotech.net, Raffy Pedrajita of Tech Patrol, and Enzo Luna of juanmanilaexpress.com)
The game was divided into three rounds, Power Tower, wherein representatives from each team were tasked to build a tower within one minute using only six lug nuts skewered on a chopstick, a Trivia game about The Big Bang Theory, technology, and geek culture which was played using MSI Gaming Laptops and the online app Kahoot!, and lastly, Act-choo!, wherein teams were asked to act out and guess a set of words.
In the end, Team A emerged victorious, ant took home the grand prize of PhP11,700 worth of goodies, including an MSI headset bundle, and prizes from Digital Wlaker, OtterBox, and Jack TV. Second placers, Team C, were given a package worth PhP8,000, while the third placers, Team B, were awarded PhP5,300 worth of prizes. All players also received gifts from DJI Philippines and the Walt Disney Company Philippines.
Geek Wars 2018 is part of Speed Magazine’s 15th anniversary celebration, and is made in partnership with SM Supermalls, Cyberzone, and MSI Notebooks. In cooperation with TV partner Jack TV, Digital Walker, Otterbox, and DJI Philippines, and with the participation of Goldilocks, Agents International Inc., and The Walt Disney Company Philippines.
