Not waiting for June where we assumed the Xbox would officially take the curtains off on its next generation offering, the Xbox Series X finally shows us what it is made of and man is it packing some serious heat under the hood.
The most important numbers are stated below:
- CPU: 8x Cores @ 3.8 GHz (3.66 GHz w/ SMT) Custom Zen 2 CPU
- GPU: 12 TFLOPS, 52 CUs @ 1.825 GHz Custom RDNA 2 GPU
- Die Size: 360.45 mm2
- Process: 7nm Enhanced
- Memory: 16 GB GDDR6 w/ 320mb bus
- Memory Bandwidth: 10GB @ 560 GB/s, 6GB @ 336 GB/s
- Internal Storage: 1 TB Custom NVME SSD
- I/O Throughput: 2.4 GB/s (Raw), 4.8 GB/s (Compressed, with custom hardware decompression block)
- Expandable Storage: 1 TB Expansion Card (matches internal storage exactly)
- External Storage: USB 3.2 External HDD Support
- Optical Drive: 4K UHD Blu-Ray Drive
- Performance Target: 4K @ 60 FPS, Up to 120 FPS
Interesting to note that there is a 1TB Expansion Card Slot, but the external SSD that can be placed is proprietary, meaning current external SSD’s will not be usable by the system. With current generation games having an install size of upwards of 100GB, you can expect a 1TB Hard Drive to fill up like it was nothing, considering the asset sizes for full 4K games.
Microsoft also showed very impressive tech demos which highlight the Quick Resume feature and the speed of loading times, as can be seen below:
Quick Resume is one of the features that most excite us. As we mentioned previously, this offering looks to emulate the Nintendo Switch sleep state but across multiple titles and even enduring through system reboots and if the tech demo is any indication, you can hop in and out of titles in a matter of less than 10 seconds.
Austin Evans, one of the guys who got to take a peek at the Series X first hand had this to share regarding the size of the upcoming system.

Of course, a Banana, just for scale. So the Xbox will basically be… 1 and a half Bananas tall and 1 Banana wide?
Whatever the case may be, Microsoft is fully confident that the Series X will be taking the next generation by storm and with all of the studio acquisitions to beef up their first party lineup, the Series X is a serious contender for a must buy console as it releases on Holiday 2020.
