The Indian Government has just permanently banned 59 Chinese apps including TikTok, WeChat, Baidu, several Xiaomi-related apps, and Alibaba’s main browser UC Browser, to name a few. This comes after company representatives failed to impress the government with their response over matters like data security and privacy.
The ban against the Chinese apps is done under Section 69A of the IT Act, accusing them of engaging in activities prejudicial to the sovereignty and integrity of the country.
Up to this point, users in the country were able to download and use some apps while the developers built a defense case.
India has banned over 250 mobile apps in the span of several months over issues with data collection and user privacy. These are the latest additions to the list of apps. However, the companies, according to reports, have been served notice on an individual basis, there is no public list of apps permanently banned in India.
