Apple has just expanded its M1 family with the new iMac and iPad Pro at its Spring Loaded event. Thanks to the M1 chipset, the company was able to redesign the iMac with a slimmer body and has also offered up to seven color options.
Updated iMac
The iMac has a 24-inch 4.5K Retina display with 500nits of brightness, P3 wide gamut, and 11.3 million pixels. It also features a 1080p FaceTime HD camera, studio-quality three-microphone array, and a six-speaker sound system.
The new camera utilizes the Neural Engine in the M1 chip to enhance image quality. The microphones, on the other hand, are positioned to reduce feedback from the rest of the system, while directional beamforming allows noise-cancellation for a clearer voice recording.
The speaker system has two pairs of force-canceling woofers placed side by side for better bass response balanced with a high-performance tweeter. This six-speaker sound system coupled with Dolby Atmos makes for a more immersive movie-watching experience.
With the combination of the M1 chip and macOS Big Sur, the new iMac instantly wakes from sleep, everyday tasks feel faster, and apps launch with impressive speed. It is said to offer up to 85% faster CPU performance compares to the standard 21.5-inch iMac. In addition, it is said to be up to 2x faster in GPU performance and offer up to 3x faster in machine learning.
The new iMac features two USB-C ports and two Thunderbolt ports. The latter allows support for up to a 6K display. The 8-core variant offers two more USB-C ports and a 16Gbps Ethernet port in the power adapter.
Magic Keyboard, Mouse, and Trackpad refreshed
Alongside the new iMac, the company also announced Magic Mouse, Magic Trackpad, and three new models of the Magic Keyboard that are all color-matched.
Two of the Magic Keyboard options bring Touch ID to iMac. It uses a dedicated security component that communicates with Security Enclave in M1 allowing you to make purchases with Apple Pay and switch users with Fast User Switching. One of the two Touch ID Magic Keyboards is a full-sized keyboard with a numeric keypad, while the other has a more usual configuration.
The last option of the Magic Keyboard includes an Emoji and Lock button as well as Spotlight, Dictation, and Do Not Disturb keys.
