Huawei FreeBuds 4: More than just a music accessory

Contents (maximize to view)

For more than a year now, most of us have been preoccupied with work-from-home activities and the majority of which are spent on long hours of Zoom or Microsoft Teams calls. Regardless of our daily grinds, we spent a lot of time using headphones or earphones because maintaining constant contact is key in every organization especially during quarantine.

This situation that most Filipinos are in called for new demands in the WFH workspace. There is a reason why there was a sudden spike in the demand for laptops, microphones, webcams, and earbuds. Thankfully, brands like Huawei have available products that can support such demand that can easily be purchased on their brick-and-mortar and e-commerce stores.

FreeBuds 4, perfect fit for you

Over the years, Huawei has been doing its best to perfect the FreeBuds line-up. I believe that they did a tremendous job in improving it. The new Huawei FreeBuds 4 is made with the intention of making the listening experience enjoyable and more than just a music accessory.

The look of the new FreeBuds 4 does not entirely shy away from the previous generation. The charging case looks the same as the FreeBuds 3. You get an earbud with an extending shaft that accommodates touch control and a microphone. Controlling the features of the FreeBuds 4 is very easy as well. The shaft enables users to swipe up or down to increase or decrease the volume. Long tapping the upper portion of the stem enables Active Noise Cancellation 2.0, while short tapping it would pause or play a media that is being played.

One of the recent technologies that Huawei introduced in their FreeBuds line-up is Open-fit Active Noise Cancellation 2.0. They made sure it is better this time around on the FreeBuds 4. Apart from being very light – each bud is almost as light as a feather – it has this perfect fit based on Huawei’s ergonomic simulations. We are speaking of more than 10,000 human ear models that Huawei studied to bring about the optimal wearing comfort for every user.

Huawei made sure that it is very comfortable to wear, which I believe is perfect nowadays since a lot of Filipinos are now more engaged in long hours of work-from-home Zoom calls. Let me talk like a nerd here – so what you’re seeing is a newly designed earbud. This design went through 13 size optimizations to emphasize the reduction of the size of the body and stem. This design optimization subtly changed the design and drastically made it lighter. However, this is not just all about making it look good and lighter, but this also affects the efficiency of its ANC or anti-noise canceling features.

The Active Noise Cancellation 2.0 on the FreeBuds 4 works really well because of two reasons: the dual-microphone design and the all-new adaptive ear-matching technology.

The new TWS features a staggered wind-proof structure that prevents wind noise that can possibly affect its anti-noise canceling feature. It also has an internal microphone that picks up internal noise more effectively, and another sound pick-up tube installed on the other microphone that enhances the noise pickup. This ability to effectively picking up noise allows the earphone to cancel it with precision. It does not fully block noise, honestly, but you can definitely notice the difference when I am not wearing the buds.

This is also the first in the FreeBuds line-up to have Adaptive Ear Matching technology. What it does is the earbuds detect the ear canal shape and wearing conditions, and then use the most effective noise-canceling parameters from multiple data sets. This is a very smart implementation, and I really hope that other companies will adapt to this kind of technology.

Impressive Quality and can connect to more than one device

In terms of listening experience – thanks to its frequency range up to 40Khz, the sound quality of this earphone is more than enough for me to appreciate my small collection of high-definition sounds. I am not an expert, by any means, but I can appreciate the music I listen to when I use quality wireless earbuds like the FreeBuds 4. FreeBuds 4 has a well-balanced signature and a subtle bass kick, thanks to its bass booster technology that further upped its performance by 15% versus its previous version.

You can now also connect this TWS to more than just one sound source. I managed to connect this to my Huawei Mate40 Pro and the Huawei Watch 3 at the same time. This means that I can continuously listen to my music even when I’m away from my smartphone. What is even more impressive is that it is compatible with any Android or iOS device using the Huawei AI Life app.

Last but not the least, Huawei also further improved voice pickup thereby making this one of the best audio recording TWS around. Listen to this sample audio recording.

This is very useful especially to those who are into long hours of voice or video calls. Huawei also made sure that you’re aware of the earbuds need some charging. All you need to do is to put the earbuds back in the case until it is fully charged.
