The World Intellectual Property Office (WIPO) published a patent from Apple last March 31, 2022 that shows three different designs for potential handheld gamepads for the iPhone.
According to the patent, one design is shown to have a touchscreen in the middle that seems to function and look like Nintendo’s 3DS handheld device. Including a second display to input text and display in-game notifications.
Additionally, it showed how the folio case can allow the iPhone to be placed in landscape mode while the gamepad is used wirelessly.
Two more designs were shown and feature the following:
- A design that looks like the Nintendo Switch in which two smaller gamepads are connected wirelessly and are located on the side of the device which can be used either in portrait or landscape.
- A third design in which it is designed like a traditional controller used for consoles that have a wired connection.
Just to be clear, Apple has not confirmed anything regarding these patents or if they will bring anything like it to the market.
