The National Privacy Commission (NPC) has just completed its initial probe into SMS scams. Although, the results of the investigation were kept under wraps.
Following the probe, the NPC disclosed in a Viber message on Wednesday that they will include the National Telecommunications Commissions and telecommunication firms to discuss the next steps.
Text scams have been increasingly common in the past months. Things have even gotten worse with some users reporting text scams with their full names mentioned.
These ramped up since contact tracing efforts took place during the early months of the pandemic. In doing so, Filipinos signed control of their personal information to commercial businesses and the national government.
NPC previously summoned telecommunication companies, banks, and e-commerce firms back in November 2021. This was to demand answers on what the private sector is doing to address the growing text scam problem.
With nothing concrete out just yet, we’ll just have to wait and see where this goes. We hope it will be sorted out sooner rather than later.
