Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella shared that the company reduce its overall workforce by 10,000 jobs through the end of Q3 of the 2023 fiscal year. This is said to be less than 5% of its total workforce.
Microsoft Layoffs
Nadella cited the shifting macroeconomic climate as a factor for this decision.
“We’re now seeing them optimize their digital spending to do more with less. We’re also seeing organizations in every industry and geography exercise caution as some parts of the world are in a recession and other parts are anticipating one,” he said in a statement
The company is also taking a USD 1.2 billion charge in Q2 in relation to severance costs, changes to its hardware portfolio, and the cost of lease consolidation.
Despite the cuts, Nadella clarified that the company will “continue to hire in key strategic areas” as well as “continue to invest in strategic areas for the future of the company”.
Microsoft isn’t the first big tech company to announce layoffs due to the recession. In November last year, Meta also announced that it will let go of about 11,000 employees, or around 13% of its employee base. Additionally, Amazon also announced its plan to cut 18,000 of its global employees.
Ram found his love and appreciation for writing in 2015 having started in the gaming and esports sphere for GG Network. He would then transition to focus more on the world of tech which has also began his journey into learning more about this world. That said though, he still has the mentality of "as long as it works" for his personal gadgets.
