Nothing CEO, Carl Pei has just confirmed that the Nothing Phone (2) will be introduced in the US later this year in an exclusive interview with Inverse.
Nothing didn’t sell the Nothing Phone (1) in the US however the company did sell the Ear (1). Pei explained that the Phone (1) wasn’t released in the US because the company didn’t have the resources. US carriers demand that phones pass through certifications and mandate that specific features must be included in the software.
Nothing Phone (2) and More
In the interview, Pei carefully iterates that the Nothing Phone (2) will be more premium than the Phone (1).
He clarified, “That’s why I want to avoid calling the Phone (2) a flagship because that would mean that the Phone (1) was not a flagship. Within our own portfolio of smartphones, the Phone (1) was very much a flagship in terms of the amount of care we put into the product. That’s why I used the word ‘premium’ instead, which signifies that it’s a more premium step up, but it’s still a flagship just like the Phone (1).”
Pei also made it clear that his tweet referring to the Nothing Phone (2) not releasing any time soon was simply a response to companies “launching phones every two months and not supporting them.”
The interview also covered the phone’s software, Nothing OS. Pei mentioned that early on, there were only 5 engineers on the mobile time so work on the software had to be outsourced. Since then, the team has been expanded to include 100 people working on the software so Nothing’s Android 13 beta is made in-house.
Nothing’s growth has been pretty impressive. It started with 200 employees in 2021 which has doubled today. Additionally, its revenue has increased from USD 24 million in its first year to USD 200 million in 2022. This also explains why the company is ready to take on the US market.
Pei also mentioned that the company will open more retail stores. He also stated that the company will also need “a slightly richer product portfolio with more products”.
