MWC 2023 is done however, Huawei has just been accused of tracking visitors who visited its booth at the convention. It is alleged that the Chinese tech giant was doing this via its security badges.
The allegation started after some visitors failed to return their security badges needed at the booth. Among those was the Nokia Senior Vice President of Europe Rolf Werner who took his badge apart. He found circuits in the plastic part of the badges which is believed to be a tracking device.
Huawei Statement
Huawei has since denied the allegations in a statement. “The Huawei pass is used only in the booth and returned when visitors get out. There is no need to track location,” the spokesperson said.
Additionally, the company mentions that RFID and Bluetooth technologies were used on the back of the badge. This was used to collect the real-time location information and the residence time information of the badge holders within the exhibition area.
The information collected will be used to analyze the interests of those invited to enhance their service quality. The company also assured that the information collected will be protected according to their privacy collection.
Meanwhile, the GSM Association (GSMA), organizers of MWC, mentioned that they are investigating the issue as it is a serious allegation.
These allegations are pretty massive, especially after the sanctions and allegations the US has placed on the Chinese tech giant.
