According to a report from Bloomberg, Samsung has reportedly banned its employees from using generative AI tools like ChatGPT, Google Bard, and Bing due to security.

Samsung is concerned that by using these AI tools the data could end up being disclosed to others because the data is stored in external servers.

“Interest in generative AI platforms such as ChatGPT has been growing internally and externally. While this interest focuses on the usefulness and efficiency of these platforms, there are also growing concerns about security risks presented by generative AI,” the company said to its employees.

The new policy is applicable to Samsung-owned computers, tablets, and phones. It comes after the company’s own engineers accidentally leaked internal source code by uploading it to ChatGPT, according to the memo.

“HQ is reviewing security measures to create a secure environment for safely using generative AI to enhance employees’ productivity and efficiency. However, until these measures are prepared, we are temporarily restricting the use of generative AI,” the memo read.

Prior to this, tech executives signed a petition urging leading AI labs to pause the development of their systems due to risks to human society. There were reports as well recently claiming that ChatGPT could be banned in Germany due to data protection issues.

Samsung has yet to release an official statement though on the reported new policy, as of writing this.
