According to reports, Meta is considering charging for an ad-free version of Instagram or Facebook on mobile in Europe for EUR 13/month, EUR 17/month for desktop, and EUR 19/month for both versions.
This is said to come after the company was tried by the European Court of Justice (ECJ) that under the EU General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) Facebook cannot justify using user’s personal data to target them with personalised ads. This, of course, is the social media platforms’ main means of generating income.
Meta Paid Version Coming?
The ad-free plan, according to the Wall Street Journal, is dubbed SNA (subscription no ads) and offers two options to users – the paid ad-free version and the free option with personalized ads.
It is believed that the company could introduce the new plan next month. It has until the end of November to comply with the ECJ ruling to ensure consistent application of the GDPR.
“Meta believes in the value of free services which are supported by personalised ads. However, we continue to explore options to ensure we comply with evolving regulatory requirements.”
Meta spokesperson
The company introduced this year a subscription service wherein you can get the verified badge on both its platforms and direct access to customer support. Although, this doesn’t offer an ad-free service.
We can only wait and see if the ad-free version of Instagram and Facebook will actually be rolled out and if it will be introduced globally.
