Tecno Phantom V Flip Review
It wasn’t too long ago when I published my review of the Tecno Phantom V Fold. It is an easy recommendation of a foldable phone because of its affordable price and good performance. It is, however, an imperfect device; but it put Tecno into the spotlight as a brand that bring good performance smartphones with premium features at an affordable cost.
Design
The Tecno Phantom V Flip is a premium flip phone with a stylish and elegant design. The outer cover is made of vegan leather with a lychee pattern, which gives it a luxurious look and feel. The phone is also available in two colors: Iconic Black and Cosmic Silver.
The Phantom V Flip is designed to be comfortable to use in both folded and unfolded positions. When unfolded, the phone measures 171.72 x 74.05 x 6.95mm and weighs 194 grams. When folded, it measures 88.77 x 74.05 x 14.95mm.
Display
The Phantom V Flip has two displays: a 6.9-inch foldable OLED display on the inside and a 1.32-inch AMOLED display on the outside.
The inner display is bright, sharp, and colorful, with a 120Hz refresh rate for smooth scrolling and animations. The outer display is smaller, but it’s still big enough to be useful for checking notifications, taking selfies, and launching quick settings.
Hinge
The Phantom V Flip uses a new hinge design that Tecno claims is more durable and has less of a crease than previous foldable phones. The hinge also allows the phone to be folded at different angles, which is useful for taking photos and videos or for using the phone in hands-free mode.
The crease does not pale in comparison when compared to more affordable flip smartphones like the OPPO Find N3 Flip. It also flexes and stays in certain angles, which brings additional features to users like giving extra controls while watching YouTube or using the phone like a camcorder. This feature is missing on the Tecno Phantom V Fold.
Processor, SOC, and Performance
The Phantom V Flip is powered by the MediaTek Dimensity 8050 chipset, which is an upper mid-range chipset that’s capable of handling most tasks with ease. The phone also comes with 8GB of RAM and 256GB of storage.
In benchmarks, the Phantom V Flip scores similar to other phones with the Dimensity 8050 chipset, such as the OnePlus Nord 3 and the Realme GT Neo 3. In real-world use, the phone performs well, with no noticeable lag or slowdown. Its performance is leaps beyond the Dimensity 8020. It is, however, somewhat, just as fast as the Snapdragon 7 Gen 1.
Camera specs and Performance
The Phantom V Flip has a triple-camera system on the back, consisting of a 64MP main camera, an 8MP ultrawide camera, and a 2MP macro camera. The front camera is a 32MP sensor.
The cameras perform well in both good and low light. The main camera is able to capture sharp and detailed images, even in low-light conditions. The ultrawide camera is useful for capturing group photos or landscapes. The macro camera is good for taking close-up photos of small objects.
The front camera is also good for taking selfies and making video calls. It has a number of features, such as eye autofocus and portrait mode, which can help you take better photos and videos. While this isn’t the phone’s strongest suit, it takes impressive photos even when compared to other camera-focused midrange smartphones in the market.
Software
The Phantom V Flip runs on HiOS 13.5, which is a custom skin of Android 13. HiOS is a feature-rich skin that offers a variety of customization options and additional features.
The phone also comes with a few pre-installed apps, but they’re not too intrusive. Ella, its digital assistant software, is supercharged with ChatGPT, and can perform what you would expect on OpenAI’s software. Normally, you would need to download or make an app for this, and integrate OpenAI API to have ChatGPT on your software. The Tecno Phantom V Flip already has this built-in to its system.
Battery
The Phantom V Flip has a 4300mAh battery, which is larger than the batteries in most other foldable phones. The battery life is good, and it should last most people a full day on a single charge.
The phone also supports 45W fast charging, so you can quickly top it up if you need to.
Connectivity and other Features
The Phantom V Flip supports 5G, Wi-Fi 6, Bluetooth 5.3, and NFC. It also has a fingerprint sensor on the side and a face unlock feature.
Other features include a dual-SIM card slot, a microSD card slot, and a stereo speaker system.
Verdict
The Tecno Phantom V Flip is a great foldable phone for people who are looking for a stylish and affordable device. It has a good design, a bright and sharp display, a durable hinge, and a capable processor. The cameras are also good, and the battery life is impressive.
