Apple cemented its position as the world’s top smartphone vendor in 2023, capturing not just the most spots but also the #1 best-selling model in Canalys’ annual smartphone shipping report. The tech giant shipped a whopping 7 out of the top 10 smartphones worldwide last year.
iPhone 14 Pro Max Leads the Pack, Outsells Newer Model
Leading the pack was the iPhone 14 Pro Max, Apple’s premium flagship released back in September 2022. Despite being a previous-generation device, it still managed to ship the highest volume at 34 million units. This shows that Apple’s tried-and-true formula of iterative updates still has tremendous appeal amongst iPhone loyalists.
Trailing behind at second place was the new iPhone 15 Pro Max with 33 million shipments. The latest Pro series boasts Apple’s newest A17 Pro chip and an upgraded camera system. Other new iPhone 15 models also made the top 10 – the regular iPhone 15 took 10th place with 17 million units shipped.
Apple’s iPhone 14 series from 2022 still sold strongly as well. The regular iPhone 14 took 3rd place with 29 million shipments, followed by the iPhone 14 Pro with the same volume at 4th place. And remarkably, the even older iPhone 13 still saw robust demand, landing at 5th place with 23 million units moved.
As for Apple’s main rival Samsung, landed 3 Galaxy models amongst the rankings: the Galaxy A14 4G took 6th place with 21 million shipments, followed by the Galaxy A54 at 8th place with 20 million, and the Galaxy A14 5G at 9th place with 19 million.
Interestingly, Samsung’s budget 4G model outsold its 5G variant, suggesting that consumers at the lower end still opted for the cheaper 4G option.
