The Department of the Interior and Local Government (DILG) has directed local government units (LGUs) to delineate routes for electric vehicles (e-vehicles) in accordance with the Electric Vehicle Industry Development Act (Evida Law).

This directive aims to address concerns regarding the proposed regulations governing the use of light electronic vehicles, such as e-bikes and e-trikes, nationwide.

E-Vehicles to Follow a New Directive

Interior and Local Government Secretary Benhur Abalos emphasized the necessity of complying with the Evida Law, urging LGUs to establish designated routes for electronic vehicles.

Moreover, the law mandates that e-vehicles operate only on routes identified by LGUs and endorsed by the Department of Transportation (DOTr).

“As early as now, create routes where these so-called electric vehicles will pass through. This isn’t an order from the DILG or MMDA (Metropolitan Manila Development Authority). This is a law.”

Abalos further noted that a technical working group is examining traffic issues in Metro Manila, including the integration of e-vehicles.

While the current approach maintains the status quo to prevent chaos, discussions continue implementing policies such as requiring driver’s licenses and vehicle registration for e-vehicle operators.
