Meta has just unveiled Llama 3, the latest version of its open source large language model (LLM). It currently comes in two model weight parameters and will be available for broader use.

Llama 3 currently powers Meta AI and it will be available soon for Amazon Web Services (AWS), Databricks, Google Cloud, Hugging Face, and will also have support from AMD, AWS, Dell, Intel, NVIDIA, and Qualcomm.
The first two models of the company’s LLM feature pre-trained and instruction-fine-tuned models with 8B and 70B (B refers to billions and showcases how complex a model is) parameters that can support a broad range of use cases. These are said to be a major leap over Llama 2 due to improvements in pretraining and post-training.
That said though, Meta clarified that the new LLM only offers text-based responses so far. It is also said to show more diversity in answering prompts and has fewer false refusals. Moreover, the company boasts that Llama 3 understands more instructions and writes better code.
“This evaluation set contains 1,800 prompts that cover 12 key use cases: asking for advice, brainstorming, classification, closed question answering, coding, creative writing, extraction, inhabiting a character/persona, open question answering, reasoning, rewriting, and summarization,” the company said in its blog post.
The company also boasts that both sizes of Llama 3 beat other models like Google’s Gemma and Gemini, Mistral 7B, and Anthropic’s Claude 3.
