In February Andy Nguyen, a Google cloud vulnerability researcher, took to social media to show that they were able to hack a PlayStation Portal to run the PPSSPP emulator to play Grand Theft Auto: Liberty City Stories natively.
Now, Sony has fixed the exploit in the recent 2.06 update he and his team “responsibly reported the issues to PlayStation”.
PlayStation Portal and the PSP Emulator Exploit
Nguyen, along with Google security engineer Calle Svensson and someone dubbed xyz, hacked the PlayStation Portal to make the PPSSPP emulator run natively on the handheld device.
He confirmed that this was all done via the software after he was asked if it took hardware exploitation.
He’s no stranger to finding exploits in Sony devices though as he has discovered multiple in the PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5.
The PlayStation Portal was introduced in August 2023 which was meant to stream your PlayStation 5 games wirelessly. Yes, stream, meaning it couldn’t play games natively on the handheld gaming device that costs USD 199.99.
If you plan to get PlayStation Portal with hopes of trying the exploit, we think it’s a bit too late for that. Even Nguyen advises against it because you’re forced to download the latest firmware upon booting the handheld device. Unless, of course, he (and his team) or someone else finds another way around it.
