The International Data Corporation (IDC) has just revealed the Q1 2024 smartphone shipment report. It revealed that Samsung has taken back the top spot after it dropped to second in Q4 2023. Moreover, it revealed an increase in global smartphone shipments year-over-year.
Samsung Takes Number One Again Globally
As a recall, Apple was able to topple Samsung from the top global smartphone shipments in Q4 2023 but now, Samsung has once again regained its spot on the top to kick off 2024 with a 20.8% market share and shipments of around 60.1 million. This is lower though compared to the same period last year where the Korean giant held 22.5% of the market share with 60.5 million shipments.
The increase in shipments for Samsung could be attributed to the Galaxy S24 series comprised of the Galaxy S24, S24+, and S24 Ultra which was introduced in February. The series debuted the AI-powered Galaxy AI features.
Apple recorded the biggest year-over-year loss in the same period last year in the top five. However, it still held strong in second with a market share of 17.3% in Q1 2024 from 20.7%. The Cupertino-based company had 50.1 million shipments in Q1 2024 down from 55.4 million in Q1 2023.
The third and fourth spots in the ranking didn’t change from the Q4 2023 ranking with Xiaomi and Transsion looking formidable. The two companies are also the only manufacturers in the top 5 to see positive year-over-year change.
Xiaomi has a 14.1% market share with 40.8 million shipments in Q1 2024, an impressive increase from Q1 2023 of 11.4% share and 30.5 million shipments.
Transsion, the parent company of itel, Infinix, and TECNO Mobile, claimed 9.9% of the market and 28.5 million shipments. This is a whopping 84.9% increase year-over-year, the biggest growth among the manufacturers.
OPPO closed out the top five in Q1 2024 with 25.2 million shipments, which is 8.7% of the market share.
That said though, IDC saw that the global smartphone shipments increased by 7.8% year-over-year with shipments of 289.4 million units in Q1 2024.
