At Computex 2024, MediaTek unveiled two new powerful chipsets that promise to supercharge the next generation of Chromebooks and smart TVs. The Kompanio 838 system-on-chip (SoC) for premium Chromebooks and the Pentonic 800 SoC for 4K smart TVs and displays.
MediaTek Kompanio 838
The Kompanio 838 is an octa-core chip designed to provide outstanding performance and all-day battery life for thin and light Chromebook laptops. It supports up to DDR4 memory and doubles the memory bandwidth over previous generations. A key innovation is the dedicated MediaTek NPU 650 AI processor, which enables interactive AI features and enhanced multimedia processing.
Leading Chromebook makers like Lenovo are already lining up to incorporate the Kompanio 838 into their upcoming premium Chromebook models.
“The need for energy efficient devices capable of multitasking continues to grow and we are committed to empowering students and teachers with tech devices and solutions that enhance learning in the classroom and beyond. Lenovo and MediaTek have a long-standing partnership focused on delivering performance and value, and we look forward to bringing the Kompanio series chips to our upcoming Lenovo Chromebooks.”
– Benny Zhang, Executive Director and General Manager of Chromebooks in Lenovo’s Global Innovation Center, Intelligent Devices Group
Pentonic 800
On the smart TV front, the Pentonic 800 chip promises to take 4K viewing and gaming experiences to new heights. Its powerful AI processor offers 50% faster performance while reducing bandwidth usage by up to 60% compared to the prior generation. The chip supports a suite of AI-powered video enhancement technologies like Super Resolution 3.0 for upscaling and AI Picture Quality for superior image clarity.
With support for the latest video codecs including AV1 and VVC, the Pentonic 800 enables ultra high-quality 4K streaming and gaming at up to 165Hz refresh rates. MediaTek’s Filogic Wi-Fi 6/6E solutions can also be integrated for reliable, low-latency wireless connectivity.
During his Computex keynote, MediaTek CEO Rick Tsai outlined the company’s vision of enabling “ubiquitous AI” across diverse products and environments from smart home to automotive. The new Kompanio and Pentonic chips revealed at the show represent a major step in that direction, bringing AI performance and multimedia enhancements to premium computing and entertainment devices.
