OPPO is set to introduce the OPPO Reno12 series 5G in the Philippines on July 12. The new series is comprised of the OPPO Reno12 5G and Reno12 Pro 5G.

We were given the opportunity to check out the OPPO Reno12 5G and we’ve had the device with us for about a little over a week. Here’s a quick look at our experience with the latest vanilla Reno member so far.

This is our first impression of the device, but we will have a full review on the device soon.

OPPO Reno12 5G – Unboxing

The OPPO Reno12 5G comes in the new OPPO box which is a clean white box with a glossy silver rectangle that occupies a big chunk of it. I love the shift in box design that OPPO has gone through, giving its devices a new premium-looking home. This includes the box for the OPPO Reno11 F 5G, OPPO A60, and OPPO Pad Neo

The OPPO Reno12 5G greets you when you lift the cover and underneath are its silicone case, documentation, and SIM ejector tool. On the bottom of the box are its charging brick and cable.

Depending on what you’re used to, this is a pretty ‘standard’ unboxing experience. However, I’m very grateful that OPPO still offers a silicone case and a charging brick with its devices.

OPPO Reno12 5G – Hands-on Experience

The Reno12 5G is built around a 6.7-inch curved FHD+ AMOLED panel with a 120Hz refresh rate. I’m still pretty neutral when it comes to flat and curved panels go for smartphones, but I enjoy the seemingly slimmer device that comes with curved panels.

What made the Reno12 5G stand out for me though is its Astro Silver color option which was lent to us. It has a futuristic look which the company calls the Futuristic Fluid Design. It has a 3D design feature with what looks like silk or metal flowing in the wind but is flat. Moreover, the finish is very smooth, which can be quite slippery and a fingerprint magnet but as a lover of texture, the stylish finish is quite eye-catching.

This is further enhanced by its rectangle camera island on the upper left of the back panel with a textured finish that mimics some watches. It houses a triple rear camera led by a 50MP main sensor and an LED flash.

The buttons are found on the right side and the bottom has the SIM card tray, USB port, and the speaker grille.

The OPPO Reno12 5G is powered by the MediaTek Dimensity 7300-Energy, MediaTek’s new energy-efficiency chip. The chip is a custom-optimized version of the Dimensity 7300 for the Reno series.

OPPO Reno12 5G First Impressions experience

The combination of the Dimensity 7300-Energy and 12GB RAM was very very smooth as far as my experience goes, as of writing this. I was also able to play a variety of games like Genshin Impact and Call of Duty Mobile for many hours while on some of the highest settings on most of the games which is quite promising.

The device runs on ColorOS 14.1 on top of Android 14 which based on my experience has its good share of pros and cons. But I’ll cover that in our full review.

OPPO Reno12 5G – Camera

The OPPO Reno12 5G is equipped with a 50MP Sony LYT-600 main sensor coupled with an 8MP ultrawide snapper and a 2MP macro sensor. Meanwhile, on the front, is a 32MP snapper.

Based on my early shots, the camera system is quite capable, which is to be expected from a member of the Portrait Expert series. I’ll take more photos for our full review but here are some snaps I’ve taken so far.

OPPO Reno12 5G – AI Experience

As a device in 2024, unsurprisingly, the Reno12 5G boasts AI features. Among these include AI LinkBoost and BeaconLink for improved connectivity and the a lot of camera features.

OPPO Reno12 5G First Impressions AI Eraser feature

So far I’ve tested AI Eraser 2.0 which now includes the removal of people in addition to the Lasso and Paint Over options.

The device also has a pre-installed app called AI Studio that can create avatars based on your face. It’s quite entertaining and fun.

Initial Verdict

I’ve always felt like companies cut a lot of corners for the vanilla variants of its different series. However, based on my testing so far, the OPPO Reno12 5G doesn’t feel like it with an impressive camera system and a chipset that carries its own weight.

The OPPO Reno12 series 5G is not only the latest in the Portrait Master series, it is also the latest in the OPPO’s AI Phone offerings. So far, I’ve had fun editing my photos and generating avatars for myself and the team. However, I’ll take a look at how these features also weave into daily life.

So far, the OPPO Reno12 5G is a promising device that is not only capable but also offers smart features. I guess where it will all lie is how much the device will be offered in the Philippines.

OPPO is set to launch the OPPO Reno12 series 5G in the country on July 12 though. We’ll have to wait for the official announcement of its price and availability then. We’ll also have our full review up by then.

For now, you can share your photos with us and we’ll use the AI Eraser 2.0 to remove the unwanted elements and people in your photos. Submit your photos here and we’ll share the results on our Facebook page in the following days.

Ram found his love and appreciation for writing in 2015 having started in the gaming and esports sphere for GG Network. He would then transition to focus more on the world of tech which has also began his journey into learning more about this world. That said though, he still has the mentality of "as long as it works" for his personal gadgets.
