Foxconn, Apple‘s largest partner, has hired 50,000 new workers at its Zhengzhou factory in China, as the factory ramps up production of the iPhone 16.

In July, to bolster iPhone 16 production, Foxconn increased its hourly wage and bonuses to 25 yuan and 7,500 yuan, respectively. Apple has set an ambitious shipment target of 90 million units for the iPhone 16, a 10% increase from the previous year, and reported a shipment volume of around 81 million units for the iPhone 15 in the second half of last year.
Foxconn, the world’s largest iPhone production base, is hiring to meet Apple’s increased shipment targets. The move comes amid speculations about Foxconn leaving China and relocating its manufacturing facilities.
In addition, the international manufacturer plans to build a new business headquarters in Zhengzhou worth KRW 200 billion (around USD 147,000,000). Apple’s sales dropped 19.1% in Q1 this year, putting pressure on both companies to ensure a successful launch and high volume for the iPhone 16.
The Chinese smartphone market is fiercely competitive, with local brands offering challenges to global heavyweights such as Apple. The knowledge and understanding of this specific market is what Apple needs to overcome this challenge.
