Xiaomi 14T is better than its predecessor!
We were very critical with the performance of the Xiaomi 13T last year. It was an amazing device but we were not too satisfied with its camera performance, especially its video capability. While the Xiaomi 13T had features that we wanted to have for a creator-centric device, it lacked crucial ones like the ability to shoot 4K60 and lacks focus peaking in Pro Mode.
A year later, Xiaomi seemed to have listened, and have solidly incorporated changes on the new Xiaomi 14T. Here’s our full review.
Build and Design
Xiaomi has taken a more streamlined approach with the 14T, refining its design to create a sleeker, more premium feel. The back panel’s texture is remarkably similar to the titanium panels found on the Galaxy S24 Ultra and iPhone 15 Pro Max, giving it a distinctly high-end aesthetic. This attention to detail extends to the camera bump, which has been slimmed down significantly compared to its predecessor, the Xiaomi 13T. It is much lighter too.
One notable characteristic is the sleep/wake button, which retains its textured surface but still does not have the distinct red Leica color that was present in other models. This subtle change contributes to a more cohesive overall design.
The Xiaomi 14T boasts an IP68 rating for dust and water resistance, ensuring durability without compromising on style. Available in Titan Black, Titan Blue, Titan Gray, and Lemon Green (PU), the device offers a range of color options to suit different tastes.
Display
The Xiaomi 14T features a 6.67-inch AMOLED display. It has a resolution of 2712 x 1220 pixels and a 446 ppi density, the screen delivers crisp, detailed visuals. The 144Hz refresh rate ensures smooth scrolling and responsive touch interactions, while the peak brightness of 4000 nits and typical brightness of 1600 nits guarantee excellent visibility even in bright outdoor conditions.
The display incorporates AI-driven features that enhance the viewing experience:
- AI Auto Brightness adapts screen luminance based on user habits and environmental conditions.
- AI Video with Local Mapping uses algorithms to restore depth perception and color accuracy in video content.
- AI Adaptive Colors adjust color temperature to match ambient lighting and content type.
- AI Touch Control improves sensitivity when using gloves or screen protectors, with a touch sampling rate of up to 2160Hz in gaming scenarios.
- AI Eye-Care provides round-the-clock protection with 3840Hz PWM dimming in low light and DC dimming in normal conditions.
Hardware
Under the hood, the Xiaomi 14T is powered by the MediaTek Dimensity 8300-Ultra processor, built on a 4nm process. This octa-core CPU, coupled with the Arm Mali-G615 GPU, delivers robust performance for everyday tasks and demanding applications alike.
The device comes with up to 12GB of LPDDR5X RAM and up to 512GB of UFS 4.0 storage, ensuring smooth multitasking and ample space for apps and media. The Xiaomi IceLoop cooling system helps maintain optimal performance during extended use.
Benchmark Performance
The Xiaomi 14T’s performance is impressive, as evidenced by its benchmark scores:
- AnTuTu: 1,308,007
- Geekbench 6 Single Core: 1,372
- Geekbench 6 Multi Core: 4,259
- PC Mark: 13,611
These scores indicate that the Xiaomi 14T is capable of handling demanding tasks and should provide a smooth user experience across a wide range of applications.
Software and Other Features
Running on Xiaomi HyperOS, the 14T offers a refined user interface with a host of AI-powered features. While many of these features, such as AI Message Assistant, AI Recorder, AI Notes, AI Video Subtitles, AI Portrait, and AI Film, are slated for future OTA updates, the potential for enhanced productivity and creativity is significant.
The device includes practical features like Smart IR Remote, allowing users to control compatible home appliances directly from their phone. The software also incorporates battery optimization features, with options to switch between Balanced, Performance, and Ultra Battery Saver modes to suit different usage scenarios.
Camera
The Xiaomi 14T’s camera system is a standout feature, leveraging Leica optics and advanced AI processing to deliver exceptional image quality. The main camera boasts a 50MP Sony IMX906 sensor with OIS, complemented by a 50MP telephoto lens and a 12MP ultra-wide lens.
The AI-powered camera features are particularly impressive:
- AI Erase allows users to remove unwanted elements from photos, such as power lines or people, with surprising accuracy.
- AI Bokeh and Sky enhancement features stand out, offering professional-looking results with minimal effort.
- Multiple watermark options are available for personalizing images.
While the default color settings cannot be saved to a custom profile, the robust photo editing suite makes post-processing a breeze, with minimal loss of detail. For those seeking maximum control, Pro Mode offers extensive manual adjustments.
Video quality is excellent, with Pro Mode available for videography as well. It also hosts quite a number of Pro video features like the ability to shoot at 4K60 (an improvement from last year’s 4K30), shoot video using LOG, and Focus Peeking, to name a few. It’s worth noting that while the BlackMagic Camera app can be installed, only the 47mm lens is currently compatible.
Audio
The Xiaomi 14T delivers good speaker quality, providing a satisfying audio experience for media consumption and hands-free calls. The device features stereo speakers and supports Dolby Atmos, Hi-Res, and Hi-Res Wireless audio certifications.
Battery
Battery life is a strong point for the Xiaomi 14T, with users reporting up to 12 hours and 25 minutes of usage on a single charge in my usage. The 5000mAh battery supports 67W HyperCharge technology, enabling rapid recharging when needed.
Xiaomi has implemented smart charging features to protect battery health, limiting charging speeds and optimizing charging patterns to extend the battery’s lifespan. The default Balanced mode strikes a good balance between performance and efficiency, but users can opt for Performance Mode or Ultra Battery Saver depending on their needs.
Verdict
The Xiaomi 14T represents a significant step forward for the brand, offering a compelling package that combines premium design, powerful hardware, and innovative AI features. While some of the promised AI capabilities are yet to be rolled out, the foundation is in place for a truly intelligent smartphone experience.
The device’s strengths lie in its refined design, excellent display, capable camera system, and strong battery life. The MediaTek Dimensity 8300-Ultra processor provides ample power for most users, and the AI enhancements to photography and user experience are genuinely useful.
Perhaps most surprisingly, the Xiaomi 14T comes in at a price point that’s more competitive than expected, making it an attractive option for those seeking flagship features without the premium price tag.
There are some minor drawbacks, such as the inability to save custom camera settings and the lack of direct video saving to external storage via OTG. However, these are relatively minor quibbles in the grand scheme of things.
Overall, the Xiaomi 14T stands as a worthy contender in the high midrange smartphone market, offering a balanced blend of performance, features, and value. As the promised AI features roll out in future updates, the device’s appeal is likely to grow even further, cementing its position as a smart choice for tech-savvy users.
