AMD’s EPYC server-slash-datacenter CPUs finally get some love as the new AMD 5th Gen EPYC CPUs are now official. Codenamed Turin, the latest 5th Gen EPYC CPUs come with major performance uplifts brought upon by the Zen 5 core architecture.
AMD 5th Gen EPIC “Turin” Processors – Up to 192 Cores, 500W TDPs, and 5 GHz Clockspeeds
AMD claims “exceptional uplifts” over the previous 4th Gen EPYC line with up to a 17% performance increase for Enterprise and Cloud platforms. Meanwhile there’s an increase of up to 37% for HPC and AI platforms with the new Turin CPUs.
AMD 5th Gen EPYC Processors will come in two flavors with up to 16 Zen 5 CCDs, offering up to 128 cores and 256 threads which is the “Scale-Up variant.” The second “Scale-Out” variant uses a 3nm Zen 5C cores up to 12CCDs, offering up to 192 cores and 384 threads. This core layout is possible as Turin packs up to 17 chiplets with up to 150 Billion transistors for the full chip.
The AMD EPYC 9965 is the flagship model of the 5th Gen Turin EPYC CPUs featuring 192 cores, 394 threads, and 384 MB of L3 Cache. It has a 2.25GHz base clock with boost clocks up to 3.7GHz. The EPYC 9965 has a default TDP of 500W with a price tag of $14,813 US – surprisingly 17% lower than the Intel X6900P with only 128 cores.
