I have been using the DJI Mic Mini 2 for about a year now, and it has been a blast using this device. It has been our go-to microphone for production because of its versatility, wide range of compatibility, and impressive features, albeit at a very premium price.

DJI Mic Mini Review 01

10 months later, DJI launched the DJI Mic Mini. It offers a compact and affordable option for content creators. Designed to cater to both beginners and professionals, this system provides essential features for high-quality audio recording while trimming down on some of the premium functionalities found in its predecessor, the DJI Mic 2. Here’s our comprehensive review of the DJI Mic Mini based on its specs, performance, and our real-world usability.

Inside the Box

The DJI Mic Mini package is straightforward and includes everything you need to get started. If you get their most complete package, you’ll find two transmitters (TX) and a receiver (RX), along with essential accessories like 3.5mm cable for connectivity, windscreen and a charging case. You also have the option to get a single transmitter and receiver; or just a single transmitter. I find the latter configuration the most economical especially to mobile content creators or those who currently own DJI Osmo Pocket 3 or Action 5 Pro.

The inclusion of these accessories ensures that users can quickly set up their devices without needing additional purchases. For those who opt for the TX and RX combo, the package offers a versatile setup that works seamlessly across various devices.

We received two versions of the DJI Mic Mini: they sent over a complete package (in Infinity Black), and TX only unit (in Arctic White) .

Build and Design

One of the standout features of the DJI Mic Mini is its compact and minimalist design. The transmitter is impressively small and discreet, making it ideal for on-the-go content creation. Its lightweight construction ensures it doesn’t feel cumbersome when clipped onto clothing or mounted on a device. However, its sleek finish can make it slightly slippery, so users should handle it with care to avoid accidental drops. I almost dropped the TX twice while putting it on, but once in place, using it is like a walk in the park.

If you get the complete package, the included receiver is equally well-designed, with an intuitive interface that simplifies pairing and operation. The rotating knob has tactile steppers to easily determine db levels. Unlike the receiver of the DJI Mic 2, DJI Mic Mini does not have a display.

While it lacks some advanced navigation features found in the DJI Mic 2, such as a touchscreen display, it compensates with straightforward functionality that caters to users who prioritize ease of use over complexity.

Audio Quality

When it comes to audio quality, the DJI Mic Mini punches above its weight class. The sound capture is crisp, clear, and professional-grade, making it suitable for interviews, vlogs, and other content production scenarios. While it doesn’t offer 32-bit float recording like the DJI Mic 2—a feature that allows for greater flexibility in post-production—the audio output remains top-notch for most use cases.

The microphone system also integrates seamlessly with the DJI Mimo app, which provides additional controls when using the TX and RX combo. Through the app, users can adjust settings such as gain levels and monitor audio in real-time. However, when using only the TX unit without the RX, control options are more limited via DJI Mimo.

Audio quality is not at its best when connected via Bluetooth. Sound is more muffled when compared to when it’s connected using the receiver. However, I have to point out that its performance is serviceable. Also, its ability to be paired on most devices – particularly smartphones and DJI devices – without a receiver is already a plus factor.

Tested Devices

The versatility of the DJI Mic Mini shines through its compatibility with various devices. Testing revealed that it works seamlessly with DJI products like the Osmo Action 5 Pro and Osmo Pocket 3. The integration with these devices is almost effortless, thanks to DJI OsmoAudio technology, which ensures a seamless plug-and-play experience.

When paired with cameras like the Sony A7C and Sony FX30, the microphone performed reliably, delivering clear audio without any noticeable latency or interference. One feature it lacks though is the ability to record directly on the transmitter, which the DJI Mic 2 possesses. This feature gives users an extra layer of data backup should there be any transmission issues during product, which usually happens at conventions and big events like CES and Computex. The DJI Mic Mini does not this feature.

When choosing among the SKUs of the DJI Mic Mini, the camera app of the smartpohone matters in terms of compatibility. I have to reiterate that the TX + RX package, which you can buy for as low as PhP4,099, is the best configuration if you worry about compatibility. In my experience, this package offers the best compatibility as it worked on the following smartphones:

  • iPhone 16 Pro Max
  • Google Pixel 9 Pro XL
  • HONOR Magic V3

However, upon further testing, when I connected a TX via Bluetooth on all aforementioned devices, the camera app of HONOR Magic V3 did not recognize the Bluetooth-connected DJI Mic Mini as external microphone. Now, should you want to be able to maximize the compatibility of the DJI Mic Mini on your respective Android device, I suggest that you download ProShot. It is a paid app, but works the job of letting me choose my preferred external microphone.

Take note as well that if you’re going to pair the TX to the iPhone via Bluetooth, the native camera application did not pick up any mic input from the DJI Mic Mini. I also used ProShot on the iPhone, which allowed me to switch the microphone input to DJI Mici Mini connected via Bluetooth.

Range

Size matters when it comes to range, as you have to fit more antennas on its TX and RX to maximize performance. Due to its tiny build and size, its range performance is not as good as the DJI Mic 2, as it starts cutting at around the 100-meter mark, a far cry from the 250-meter range of the latter.

Battery

Battery life is another area where the DJI Mic Mini excels. With up to ten hours of operation when paired over Bluetooth, it easily supports long recording sessions without requiring frequent recharges. The included charging case adds convenience by allowing users to recharge their units on the go.

Pricing

The pricing structure of the DJI Mic Mini makes it accessible to a wide range of users:

  • 1 TX: PhP2,499
  • 1 TX + 1 RX: PhP4,099
  • 2 TX + 1 RX: PhP8,299

For those already using DJI devices like the Osmo Pocket 3 or Osmo Action 5 Pro, purchasing just one TX may suffice due to seamless native integration. However, for maximum versatility and control across different devices, investing in the TX and RX combo is highly recommended.

Verdict

The DJI Mic Mini is an impressive addition to DJI’s audio lineup. While it lacks some premium features from its predecessor—such as 32-bit float recording—it delivers exceptional audio quality at a more affordable price point. Its compact design makes it ideal for creators who need a portable solution without compromising on performance.

DJI Mic Mini Review 20

The ability to integrate with the DJI Mimo app adds value by providing additional controls for those using both TX and RX units together. However, users should be mindful of potential compatibility issues with certain Android devices like the HONOR Magic V3.
