The Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA) has proposed a significant overhaul of EDSA, including potentially eliminating the dedicated bus carousel lane. This move, driven by the perceived overlap with the MRT-3 route, has sparked debate among commuters and transportation experts.
Should the MMDA Remove the Carousel Lane?
The EDSA bus carousel is crucial in public transportation, particularly for late-night and early-morning commuters, as it operates 24/7. Its removal could significantly impact these individuals’ mobility.
MMDA Chairman Romando Artes has suggested repurposing the bus lane into a high-occupancy vehicle (HOV) lane, allowing vehicles with multiple passengers to utilize it. This measure aims to incentivize carpooling and reduce traffic congestion.

While the government agency assures that existing bus stations can be repurposed for provincial buses or UV Express routes, concerns remain regarding the potential impact on commuters who rely heavily on the EDSA bus carousel.
This proposal highlights the ongoing challenges and complexities of managing transportation in Metro Manila. Finding the optimal balance between alleviating traffic congestion and ensuring accessible and efficient public transportation for all citizens remains a critical task for the authorities.
