A recent rumor from China indicates that Sony is developing a competing 200MP sensor designed for main smartphone cameras in upcoming flagship models. These devices are anticipated to utilize either the MediaTek Dimensity 9500 or the Snapdragon 8 Elite 2 chipsets.
Sony 200MP Sensor in Development?
For a quick refresh, Samsung‘s 200MP ISOCELL sensors are making significant strides in smartphone photography. The ISOCELL HP9, specifically, has proven successful in periscope telephoto lenses, notably featured in devices like the vivo X100 Ultra, the upcoming vivo X200 Ultra, and the Xiaomi 15 Ultra.

Additionally, the ISOCELL HP2, which has a 200MP sensor, powers the main camera of the Samsung Galaxy S25 Ultra. Both of these sensors are 1/1.3 “.
Sony’s sensor is rumored to exceed 1/1.3″ in size. This larger sensor area suggests the potential for superior light-gathering capabilities compared to Samsung’s current 200MP offerings.
While specific details remain scarce, Sony’s entry into the 200MP sensor market promises increased competition, providing smartphone manufacturers with more options and potentially benefiting consumers with improved image quality.
