Starting June 20, 2025, the European Union will require all smartphones and tablets sold within its borders to include an energy label indicating battery life and efficiency. This new label is an update to the energy sticker already used for household appliances and is tailored to provide information that consumers now expect from their electronic devices.
EU Energy Label Requirement
The regulation applies to cordless phones, smartphones, features without internet access, and tablets with screen sizes between 7 and 17.4 inches. Devices with flexible, unrollable displays and those already on the market before the deadline are exempt.

The European Product Registry for Energy Labelling (EPREL) requires devices to meet five ecodesign criteria: durability, battery longevity, repairability, software support, and repair access. Manufacturers must provide accurate data, which the European Commission verifies, including ingress protection, repairability, and battery performance. The EPREL sticker will display this key information.
The Ecodesign label is part of a broader European Union initiative to improve energy efficiency by 2030. The initiative aims to reduce CO₂ emissions by 46 million tonnes and save each household an average of EUR 150. While these rules are specific to the European Union, their influence may extend globally, potentially leading manufacturers to adopt these standards worldwide.
