According to a United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) patent listing, it appears that Huawei is working on a retractable periscope telephoto camera for a smartphone.
Huawei Retractable Periscope Telephoto Camera
The patent was filed last week for an “Electronic Device with Movable Lifting Component”. The patent reveals two ways to do this:
- a mechanism that lifts to reposition itself and may be equipped with a driving motor to move the camera system near or far from the sensor
- a mechanism can be controlled manually with a rotating ring, similar to a camera lens.
This is said to deliver improved zoom performance and increase the range of the telephoto lens without the heft required of current periscope cameras that use prisms and mirrors. This then, in theory, can offer a slim device, while still offering a periscope telephoto camera experience.
This isn’t the first retractable design from Huawei though as the company featured a retractable camera on the HUAWEI Pura 70 Ultra.
It is uncertain if we’ll actually see a retractable periscope lens in the future but it’s pretty interesting to know that Huawei is continuing to innovate despite the sanctions placed by the United States many years ago.
