Apple Discontinues the iPod Touch

Apple has announced that it is discontinuing the iPod Touch after over 20 years. It is the last remaining model of the media player series of the company.

The original iPod Touch was introduced in 2007 alongside the first iPhone. The first generation Touch shared much of the hardware and software as the first iPhone minus being able to make calls. The latest iPod Touch was introduced in 2019, being almost identical to its predecessor.

In addition to the Touch, the iPod series included the iPod, iPod mini, iPod nano, and iPod Shuffle.

It isn’t too surprising that the company discontinued the last iPod series device. Instead, what’s surprising is that it took so long for it to happen especially since iPhones can all play music and more. Albeit, most models now don’t have a 3.5mm headphone jack.

Today, the spirit of iPod lives on. We’ve integrated an incredible music experience across all of our products, from the iPhone to the Apple Watch to the HomePod mini, and across Mac, iPad, and Apple TV. And Apple Music delivers industry-leading sound quality with support for spatial audio — there’s no better way to enjoy, discover, and experience music.”
