Google has recently announced that it will be merging Meet with Duo. The former was more targeted at business users, while the latter was the company’s take on Apple’s FaceTime.
According to the company, the features of Meet will be added to the Duo app in the following weeks. The Duo app will then be renamed Google Meet later this year, making it the company’s sole video communications service.
Google Duo will retain all of its features despite the name change. This includes conversation history, contacts, and messages. Meanwhile, some of the new features are:
- virtual backgrounds in calls and meetings
- scheduling of meetings
- in-meeting chat
- live sharing of content
- real-time closed captions
- increased size of video calls from 32 to 100 participants
- integrate with tools like Gmail, Google Calendar, Assistant, Messages, and more
The company has clarified that it will be available to every at no cost.
