Qualcomm has just announced its two new wearable chipsets – Snapdragon W5 and W5+ Gen 1 SoC both built on the 4nm process and offers significant improvements.
Qualcomm said that compared to its predecessor, the W5+ offers 2x performance improvements while using half the power. With typical use, the W5+ battery can last up to 50% longer taking up 30% less space.
The difference between the Snapdragon W5 and W5+ Gen 1 is that the non-plus model has no AON Co-Processor.
In addition, the W5+ Gen 1 consists of 4x Cortex A53 cores and 1x Cortex M55 efficiency core at 250MHz with the graphics being handled by an A702 GPU clocked at 1GHz. The memory support is also improved to support LPDDR4 at 2133MHz alongside a new Mchine Learning unit U55.
The AON chip on the W5+ can help the chip handle more tasks with less power usage. The co-processor also handles speech processing, audio playback, and notifications. moreover, it can also handle low-power Bluetooth 5.3, WiFi, GNSS, and other power states like Deep Sleep and Hibernate.
Furthermore, Qualcomm has partnered with Compel and Pegatron to create reference smartwatches that use the W5+ Gen 1 and help development progress faster.
On the other hand, Mobvoi and OPPO will be the first OEMs to launch wearables using the new SoCs with 25 smartwatch designs already in the pipeline.
