Who’s playing now and why?

The Philippines’ video gaming industry continues to experience steady growth, with recent reports indicating earnings of over $572 million, making it the 25th largest market in the world by revenue. The esports sector, in particular, holds significant potential with Filipino professional gamers actively participating in competitions and successfully bringing home medals. The Philippines’ team won two gold and two silver medals in the eSports category at the recently held 31st Southeast Asian Games in Hanoi, Vietnam.

The COVID-19 pandemic has contributed to the rise of the gaming industry, as more people have turned to games for connections, distractions, comfort, and a sense of control in their lives. Additionally, the shift to hybrid work has resulted in more time for people to play games, whether alone or with friends over Discord. Gamers have been using this extra time to revisit older games and return to the classics, and are also looking for ways to improve their gaming and work-from-home setups, such as by personalizing their workspaces with LED lighting, ergonomic seating, and custom peripherals.

The gaming community has diversified during the pandemic, as some users have been drawn to more relaxed and chill games like Animal Crossing and Stardew Valley, while others have formed communities based on the mutual desire to be competitive, learn the meta, and rank up. Additionally, live streaming has also become a matured segment of the gaming world as more people have been watching esports as a replacement for traditional sports. In the Philippines, live streaming has become a lucrative career for internet personalities who stream themselves playing the latest games and interacting with the audience.
