Samsung Display showcased its new “Flex In & Out” prototype display and hinge to The Verge at CES 2023. The prototype device is capable of folding inwards and outwards at 360 degrees all with a minimal visible crease.
Samsung Display Flex In & Out Prototype
The new prototype from Samsung Display has a new hinge design that allows the device to fold flat without the waterdrop-shaped hole in the crease. The company uses moving mechanisms that allow the panel to bend without stretching, which should improve quality and durability.
The new design would help allow foldable devices like the Galaxy Z Fold-series by freeing up the internals by removing the outer display. This could mean that manufacturers have more room for better batteries or larger camera sensors without making the device too thick.
As of writing this, it wasn’t revealed if the new Samsung Display prototype would make it to the mass-production phase but it is nice to see the company try new things out.
