Intel’s Chief Architect, Raja Koduri, has announced his departure from the company after five years of service to start his own venture, a generative AI gaming software startup. The news comes in the aftermath of the restructuring of Intel’s AXG graphics unit that took place last year. Despite Koduri’s exit, Intel assures the public that there will be no imminent changes in its organizational structure.
Raja Koduri’s Time with Intel
Koduri’s role as leader of AXG Graphics Unit was shortened after the restructuring, returning him to his original position as Chief Architect, which he held when he first joined Intel in 2017. During his time at the company, he helped design Intel’s silicon portfolio under a new six-pillar strategy, which eventually lost momentum after Jim Keller and Murthy Renduchintala’s departures in 2020 due to delays in the company’s 7nm process node.
Throughout Koduri’s tenure, he spearheaded the creation and release of Intel’s Arc graphics cards and Ponte Vecchio GPUs. Although Intel’s entry into the discrete GPU market has been mostly successful, with the creation of the first major company in 25 years, the Ponte Vecchio arrived late, and the company eventually decided to cancel its Rialto Bridge successor. The Intel Arc graphics cards for desktop PCs were also late, placing them in a less favorable position compared to their competitors, AMD and Nvidia GPUs. However, Intel has continued to improve its drivers and performance while dropping its pricing since the launch.
Koduri had a successful career in the tech industry, having worked for Apple for four years, two stints at AMD that totaled roughly 13 years, and five and a half years at Intel. His contributions to Intel’s tech and architecture, particularly in high-performance graphics that helped bring three new product lines to the market in 2022, have been praised by Intel CEO Pat Gelsinger, who thanked Koduri for his work and wished him luck in his new endeavor.
