The deadline for SIM card registration has been extended by 90 days. This was confirmed by the Department of Justice Secretary Crispin Remulla reported by STAR newspaper.

Later today, Ivan Uy, the Secretary of Information and Communications Technology, will hold a news conference in Malacañang to announce any updates regarding the SIM registration deadline extension.

This follows his meeting with President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. on the eve of the original deadline, during which less than 60% of the country’s 168 million active SIM cards were registered. This has led some groups to call for the deadline to be extended or even scrapped altogether.

The country’s two biggest telecommunications companies have requested that the government extend the registration deadline due to difficulties caused by users’ inability to provide government-issued identification.

Until Tuesday, the Department of Information and Communications Technology (DICT) had maintained its stance of sticking to the April 26 deadline, despite the SIM Registration Act granting the government the authority to prolong it for up to 120 days. On Monday, the possibility of an extension was discussed in a meeting between the DICT and telecommunications companies.

As a reminder, the SIM Registration Act was implemented to help reduce the widespread scams and spam messages that have been plaguing the country even though some government agencies say this will not fully solve this problem.
