Windows 11, according to a report from The Verge, will now have native support for RAR files and will also support other compression formats like 7-Zip, tar, and gz.
Windows 11 Native RAR Support
This was made possible because Microsoft started using the open-source libarchive project that allows for these kinds of compression formats to be supported.
With this, you wouldn’t need to download any separate compression apps like WinRAR (which has a paid license version) or 7-Zip. This would definitely help you with your file transfers in the near future.
In addition, this RAR support update comes with other features like the following:
- Windows Copilot, making Windows 11 the first PC platform to announce centralized AI assistance to help you get things done more quickly.
- Bing Chat plugins to Windows, enabling developers to integrate their apps within Windows Copilot to better serve their customers and increase engagement.
