Twitter Chairman Elon Musk announced yesterday that the platform will be imposing a temporary limit on read tweets. This, according to Musk, is to address extreme levels of data scraping and system manipulation.
Twitter Read Tweet Limit
Musk detailed initially in a tweet that the limits will be:
- Verified accounts – 6000 posts/day
- Unverified accounts – 600 posts/day
- New Unverified accounts – 300/day
However, he has since increased these to 10,000/day, 1,000/day, and 500/day, respectively. He does specify specifically that these will be a temporary limit, albeit it wasn’t revealed until when the said limit will be implemented.
What wasn’t revealed either was who was scraping the data or how long it persisted. Although according to a developer, a bug in its web app is sending requests to Twitter in an infinite loop.
There are a lot of unknowns in the situation but users yesterday were already greeted with the “rate limit exceeded” after going through their ‘allocation’.
All we can do is hope that Musk and his team will figure this out and that the limit will be lifted sooner rather than later as it could cause a mass exodus if this does last longer than people can withstand the limit.
