Despite requests for a delay from civil society, the Department of Transportation (DOTr) intends to submit a fare adjustment petition for MRT-3 fare increases. This comes after the LRT-1 and 2 recently announced fare hikes.

This was announced publicly by DOTr Undersecretary for Railways Cesar B. Chavez. He said in a statement, “It can be recalled that MRT-3’s fare hike petition was deferred due to infirmities in complying with the requirements and procedure.”

The Supreme Court has been dismissing petitions for fare adjustments on rail transit in the past eight years, challenging the former Department of Transportation and Communication’s order.

Fare increases, according to representatives of the Light Rail Transit Authority, Metro Rail Transit Line 3, and Light Rail Manila Corporation, will cut down on subsidies for public transportation.
