Following the cyber attack on the Philippine Health Insurance Corp. (PhilHealth), the Philippine Statistics Authority (PSA) was next to suffer a data breach. This was confirmed by the National Privacy Commission through the Public Information and Assistance Division chief Roren Marie Chin.

According to Department of Information and Communications Technology (DICT) Secretary Ivan John Uy, this attack did not involve ransomware like the Medusa attack on PhilHealth. He clarified that the attack on the PSA is basically a data breach.

The PSA probed the data breach and found that the breach is limited to its Community-Based Monitoring System (CBMS). This is a technology-based system of collecting data used by local governments for planning, implementation, assessment, and intervention activities.

The government agency assured that the systems for the Philippine Identification and Civil Registration were not affected by the breach. Additionally, it clarified that measures were now being implemented to ensure the security and integrity of its systems and databases.

The agency is taking additional preventive and containment measures to ensure the security and integrity of all systems and databases that it manages, including shutting down and isolating the system known to have been affected,” the PSA said.

According to data analyst Dominic Ligot on X (formerly Twitter), the leaked data dump featured 42 billion rows with identification cards and other sensitive information.
