3 months after its release, the Cherry Mobile Cosmos One Plus is still, by far, the fastest and most powerful smartphone of Cherry Mobile. After playing with the device for a couple of months, it has proven to be a worthy contender in the local smartphone competition.

In this review, we shall cover 2 salient features we love about Cosmos One Plus: gaming and camera. So far, we’ve tackled about several things during our initial review (read it here), but this time, we would like to zero in with the 2 aforementioned features. We hope to be able to give you an informative take based on our hands-on experience.

Memory Management and Games

As Cherry Mobile’s fastest smartphone to date, Cosmos One Plus is packed with quite a hefty amount of RAM, which allows tremendous number of applications running in the background. In fact, at initial boot, only 616mb is consumed out of 2.82gb available RAM. Apart from the essential apps to run the system, there are 4 applications that – in our opinion – shouldn’t actually be open upon boot: TouchPal, YouTube, KakaoTalk and 3D live weather (these apps take about 26.9mb). Nevertheless, we find this acceptable in our books and therefore negligible.

In our desktop testing of the device, we opened 4 games: Crossy Road, Star Wars: Knights of Old Republic, Real Racing 3 and Wayward Souls. All games’ variable memory consumption is around 240mb to 522mb, leaving 1.7gb to 1.3gb free memory respectively.

As expected, among the 4 games we played on the phone, Crossy Road took the least memory at 51mb (active) while Real Racing nabbed the most at 81mb (active). I did not have any problems with the Cosmos One Plus while playing these games. KOTOR had frame rate issues at first but we discovered that it’s just a mobile optimization issue and was just previously addressed.

Some games tend to consume a lot of internal storage, which really sucks especially if you have a phone with little storage left. Thankfully, the Cosmos One Plus has a 32gb internal memory that may be extended to additional 32gb more via micro SD. Default write disk may be changed, and supported applications and games may be moved from internal to SD Card. This, including USB OTG that phone also supports, have been two of the most asked questions to us about the Cosmos One Plus.

Camera

One of the great things about the Cosmos One Plus is its camera. Armed with a Sony IMX 214 camera, it is undoubtedly capable of shooting impressive photos in striking color accuracy and saturation. It is the same sensor that is found in Nexus 6. If I may reiterate in our initial review, this phone is mobile photographer’s bliss. Take a look at our sample photos below for your appreciation.

Miscellaneous

While we have zeroed in with 2 of our favorite features of the Cosmos One Plus, we feel that it’s our obligation to tell you our other glaring observations:

  • Since it’s packed with a MediaTek SoC, the device supports ClearMotion, which increases the fluency of HD videos thereby giving justice to videos in high frame rate.
  • It also supports Miravision, which gives users 2 vision modes – picture mode and the customizable user mode/
  • HotKnot is also supported out of the box, which allow exchange of data when screen touches another device. This does not require NFC, but the technology is exclusive to supported MediaTek devices
  • And yeah, the device also has NFC chip embedded on its case. It supports peer-to-peer transfer of data and content, and also has Tap & Pay.
  • Battery lasts about 18 hours at moderate usage, and with only 1 SIM active. (Yes it’s a DUAL LTE device!) LTE is on the whole time, but Auto Sync is disabled. With LTE on and Auto Sync is enabled, the battery lasts about 10 hours at moderate use; 8 hours at medium usage; and 4-5 hours at heavy use.

Verdict

Cherry Mobile Cosmos One Plus is an excellent daily driver, which hosts a ton of features and gimmicks! Everything you need is available on this phone; and if you’re a Cherry Mobile fan with a hefty sum of budget, this could be the best one you could buy. At PhP13,999, its price may be an issue for some. But with all the benefits you could get, this phone could still be a worthy option.
