Food delivery riders, with the support of the National Union of Food Delivery Riders, protested against what they consider unfair management practices by Grab, which included the new fare policy.
Grab – Updated Fare Matrix Protests
The demonstration was held in Quezon City and was a response to the company’s new fare matrix that lowered the income of the riders. According to the riders, the new policy lowers the rate per order from PHP 45 to PHP 35 and the per kilometer compensation from PHP 10 to PHP 7.
The new fare matrix not only alarmed the riders but also government authorities, including the Congress and the Senate.
“If the goal of this new fare matrix is to ease the burden of customers, it should not come at the expense of the platform’s riders,” Senator Risa Hontiveros said in a statement.
In addition, the riders called to have their colleagues reinstated, who were allegedly suspended or terminated by Grab for participating in rallies. The riders consider the response a bit harsh given that it was their effort to voice their grievances.
The alleged illegal termination of riders is currently being looked into by the National Labor Relations Commission (NLRC).
