Popular Nintendo Switch emulator Yuzu has agreed to pay a USD 2.4 million settlement to Nintendo according to a new joint court filing.
Yuzu Shuts Down and Agrees to Settlement
Nintendo of America and Tropic Haze LLC, the company behind the emulator, submitted a joint filing to “consent to judgment in favor of Nintendo, and jointly move the Court to enter monetary relief in the sum of $2,400,000.00 in favor of Nintendo and against defendant.”
The proposed final judgment would have the emulator devs permanently barred from “offering to the public, providing, marketing, advertising, promoting, selling, testing, hosting, cloning, distributing, or otherwise trafficking in Yuzu or any source code or features of Yuzu.”
Moreover, the website will shut down and have it turn over any “physical circumvention devices” or modified Switch consoles to Nintendo itself.
It is yet to be made final but given the filing was made between the lawyers of the two companies.
The development team released a public statement that confirms that the emulator is shut down and will be removed from the internet as well.
“We write today to inform you that Yuzu and Yuzu’s support of [sister emulator] Citra are being discontinued, effectively immediately.
Yuzu and its team have always been against piracy. We started the projects in good faith, out of passion for Nintendo and its consoles and games, and were not intending to cause harm. But we see now that because our projects can circumvent Nintendo’s technological protection measures and allow users to play games outside of authorized hardware, they have led to extensive piracy. In particular, we have been deeply disappointed when users have used our software to leak game content prior to its release and ruin the experience for legitimate purchasers and fans.”
