Apple has just held the Worldwide Developers Conference 2024 (WWDC 2024), during which it showcased updates to its software including iOS 18, iPadOS 18, macOS Sequoia, and watchOS 11.
Along with these, the company also introduced Apple Intelligence, the company’s own AI offering that is also integrated into the latest software updates. It brings new features that improve Siri, overall productivity, and even aids in photo editing.
Apple Intelligence
Systemwide Writing Tools
Apple Intelligence allows you to rewrite, proofread, and summarize text nearly everywhere including in Mail, Notes, Pages, and third-party apps.
- Writing Tools – tidies up your class notes, ensures a blog post reads just right, or ensures an email is perfectly crafted
- Rewrite – lets you choose from different versions of what you’ve written and helps deliver the right words to meet the occasion
- Proofread – checks your grammar, word choice, and sentence structure while suggesting edits and explaining the edits
- Summarize – select text and have it recapped in a more digestible paragraph, bulleted key points, a table, or a list
In Mail, you can stay on top of your emails much easier with features like Priority Messages and Smart Reply. Priority Messages adds a new section at the top of the inbox to show the most urgent emails. Smart Reply, on the other hand, provides suggestions for a quick response.
In Notes and Phone apps, you can now record, transcribe, and summarize audio. When a recording is initiated in a call, participants are automatically notified. Apple Intelligence will also generate a summary to help recall key points in the call.
Image Playground for Communication and Self-expression
Apple Intelligence powers image creation capabilities to help you communicate and express in new ways.
Image Playground lets you create fun images in seconds, choosing from three styles – Animation, Illustration, or Sketch. It is built into apps including Messages and is available in a dedicated app. On the new you app, you can choose from a range of concepts from categories like themes, costumes, accessories, and places or even describe the image and more.
In Notes, you can access Image Playground through the new Image Wand in the Apple Pencil tool palette, making notes more visually engaging. Rough sketches can be turned into images and you can select empty space to create an image using context from the surrounding area.
Genmoji Creation
Apple Intelligence gives you the liberty to create an original Genmoji to express yourself. You can do this by describing what you want and then selecting from the options. You can also create a Genmoji of friends and family based on their photos.
You can use these for your messages or share them as a sticker or reaction in a Tapback.
New Features in Photos
The new AI also powers Photos which makes it easier to search for photos or videos or edit your photos. You will now be able to search for specific photos with natural language like “Katie with stickers on her face” or “Maya skateboarding in a tie-dye shirt”.
A new Clean Up tool can identify and remove distracting objects in the background of a photo without accidentally altering the subject.
Creating Memories is also now easier by simply typing a description. Apple Intelligence will pick out the best photos and videos based on the description and craft a storyline with chapters based on themes identified from the photos.
Siri Enters a New Era
Of course, Apple Intelligence also improves Siri by making it more natural and more contextually relevant and more personal with the ability to simplify and accelerate everyday tasks. It can follow along if you stumble over words and maintain context from one request to the next.
Moreover, you can type to Siri and switch between text and voice to communicate depending on the moment.
Siri can now give you device support and answer thousands of questions about how to do something on iPhone, iPad, and Mac.
Siri will now also be able to take hundreds of new actions across Apple and third-party apps. An example of this includes “Bring up that article about cicadas from my Reading List” or “Send the photos from the barbecue on Saturday to Malia”.
Moreover, Apple is integrating ChatGPT access into experiences within iOS 18, iPadOS 18, and macOS Sequoia.
Apple Intelligence will be available on iPhone 15 Pro, iPhone 15 Pro Max, and iPad and Mac with M1 and later.
