The All England Club has confirmed that it will be using artificial intelligence (AI) technology at next year’s Wimbledon championships, replacing line judges.

Wimbledon – AI Technology over Line Judges

In order to implement this new rule, automated electronic line-calling technology will be installed in all 18 courts next year. This will be the first time in 147 years for the Wimbledon championships that no human line judge officials will be employed.

This isn’t entirely new though in the world of tennis as the Hawk-Eye Live System was introduced in the US Open in the 2020 Slam. The new AI technology has since become regular on the ATP Tour (Association of Tennis Professionals Tour) and set to be rolled out across the program starting next year.

“The decision to introduce Live Electronic Line Calling at The Championships was made following a significant period of consideration and consultation,” said Sally Bolton, All England Club CEO.

“Having reviewed the results of the testing undertaken at The Championships this year, we consider the technology to be sufficiently robust and the time is right to take this important step in seeking maximum accuracy in our officiating.”

The addition of AI technology will mean that the challenge concept will be dropped at Wimbledon.

“We take our responsibility to balance tradition and innovation at Wimbledon very seriously. Line umpires have played a central role in our officiating set-up at The Championships for many decades and we recognise their valuable contribution and thank them for their commitment and service,” said Bolton.
